What do personal tax accountants do?

Personal tax accountants help you understand and manage your personal tax affairs. They calculate your tax liability, prepare and submit Self Assessment tax returns, check you claim the tax reliefs and allowances you’re entitled to, and help with more complex tax matters. They also provide advice on how to manage your tax efficiently and plan for future liabilities.

Do you need an accountant to do your tax return?

No, you do not need an accountant to complete your tax return. You can file your own Self Assessment return directly with HMRC if you feel confident dealing with your tax affairs. An accountant can save you time, check your return for errors and help you identify tax reliefs or allowances you might otherwise miss. Professional advice is particularly useful if your tax affairs are complex.

When do I need to register for self-assessment?

If you need to submit a Self Assessment tax return to HMRC, you must register by 5 October following the end of the relevant tax year. The deadline for submitting your tax return is 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year.

I have sold a property. Do I need to submit a capital gains tax return?

A Capital Gains Tax return is not always required when you sell a property. Whether you need to submit one depends on several factors, including the type of property, the gain or loss on disposal, how you used the property during ownership and your residence status. If a Capital Gains Tax return is required, the deadline is usually 30 days from the date of completion. Late submission can result in significant penalties, so it is important to submit your return on time.
